 LESSON 5

Rest

Mark 2:23-3:19

SONG: Our Father, Jenn Johnson, Bethel

RED SCRIPTURE

Mark 2:27  Then Jesus said to them, “The Sabbath was made to meet the needs of people, and not people to meet the requirements of the Sabbath. So the Son of Man is Lord, even over the Sabbath!”

ADD the territories on your map: Galilee, Decapolis, Samaria, Judea, Perea, Idumea

WEEKLY THOUGHTS

1.       Read Exodus 16, particularly verse 29: “They must realize that the Sabbath is God’s gift to you.” Meditate on this thought for several minutes. Here are some possible thoughts to include: Why did God give us the Sabbath? How have I incorporated this into my life? Do I think it’s still relevant today? Why or why not?

2.      The Pharisees consistently get tangled up in the legalities of their religion. Are there any areas in your own faith where you might find yourself more legalistic? Write them down and pray for direction and clarity for each one.

3.      Jesus is 'grieved at their hardness of heart.' Who in your life carries this hardness? Look up  3 to 4 Bible verses that you can pray for them. Have the verses ready to share if you’d like.

ACT ON IT

During your Sabbath, write a letter to God, thanking Him for this rhythm of rest He has built into our world and our lives. I have found the Sabbath to  be a wonderful time to play with the Lord through creativity. Feel free to create a collage, a painting or drawing, or anything else to express your gratitude.

(If you do not already practice a weekly Sabbath, begin with 2 to 4 hours on one day. The object is to rest and delight in the Lord.)

**FOR OCTOBER 21, THE WEEK'S RED SCRIPTURE:

Mark 3:35 “Anyone who does God’s will is my brother and sister and mother.”
